Welcome to St. Matthew

Greetings Friends,

Our faith in God and our love for our neighbors has moved us to move to online worship throughout the Shelter in Place order.

This is not something we take lightly. It has come about through prayer and consultation with our synod, the Minnesota Department and Health and the Center for Disease Control. I’ve been a pastor for 24 years and I think this is the first time I have ever cancelled a worship service. COVID-19 has disrupted our lives. It has brought with it death and unemployment and debilitating isolation and loneliness for many. But for a lot of us, it has only brought inconvenience—giving up restaurants or movies or malls or sporting events or corporate worship. As people of God, we accept those inconveniences for the good of all those with which we share this planet. We do it as an act of love because we are a people known by love. We do it in faith knowing that God is in the middle of this bringing blessings we can’t see yet. We do it while speaking a message of hope to world.

Welcome to the internet presence of St. Matthew Lutheran Church, Columbia Heights, MN. We are glad you are here. We would love to know more about who you are. Here’s who we are:

The mission of St. Matthew is to connect people to the love of Jesus, nurture people with a faith centered in Jesus and empower people for Christian living in the world.

That is what we are called by God to do at St. Matthew. That is how we fulfill Jesus’ commission to make disciples. We try to do it in a simple, practical, clear, effective and focused way. We would be blessed by you gathering with us for worship, for a Bible study, a support group or one of our many mission and service activities.

Grace and Peace, Pastor Bill Hugo
